The 65610 sq.Km tear drop shaped
island which is situated in the Indian ocean close to south of India,
was well known in the past, for quality Blue Saphires and other varieties
of quality gems, quality spices , ivory and best quality Tea., Arab sea
merchants named it as SERENDIB and English planters named is as CEYLON.
People who visited this small island from the past, gave a special name
PARADISE ISLAND, because, it is very rich in everything, like a paradise
on this earth. Only thing, what, they did not found was snow. Later in
the 20th Century this was renamed as SRI LANKA. |

Though it is small, Sri Lanka
is one of the major Buddhist countries in the world from the very ancient
time.Buddhists believe that the left jaw tooth relic of buddha is in the
beautiful temple in Kandy,the capital city of hill country.People in the
country are ever smiling, well educated friendly and like hospitality.
They are very helpful for tourists. Most people are farmers cultivating
rice vegetables and spices. and fisherman are in the coastal area. In
the hill country mostly Indian originated Tamils work in tea plantations.
also milk production is high in hill country.During the fruiting season
country has more than 50 varieties of eddible tropical fruits and more
than 30 varieties of fresh vegetables.Main foriegn exchange earner is
expatriates to middle east and southest asian countries,secondly Garment
export,Tea and Precious stone exports,Rubber and coconut exports. |

Both Education and health facilities
are freely provided by the government for the people.90% of males and
82 % of females can read or write, most people either understand or speak
English. Country maintains a very good health standard. Most rural people
maintain their health, with the help of Ayurveda, a 5000 years old, natural
science of Life, which was developed by Indian yogi meditators in Himalaya
to maintain good health with the help of nature. It’s amazing to

given most people the cool quiet life with a rich culture and a history
which is continuously recorded for 2500 years in palm leaf books and on
stone.There are evidents that there had been inhabitants in this small

of ancient Hospitals, Temples, and Man made large tanks with irrigation
systems and Buildings which are from 2500 years giving evidence of a very

Politics

Since 2500 years
in the past upto 1815 nearly 250 Kings ruled this country.After that three
times the country was a colony, frst under Portugese in 1505 second under
dutch 1640 and third under british 1815 -1948. At present the country is ruled by a President elected by the people with the members of parliament leaded by a prime minister who is answerable to the President. President has full Executive powers . Sri Lanka had the first woman prime Minister in the political history of the world .She was Mrs. Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranayake. Her Husband was the earlier prime minister who was assassinated and the present President is, her daughter Mrs.Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaranatunge.Present prime minister is Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse. There are 225 seats in the Parliament and more than 50 political parties which are symbolised by colours and logos. The main two parties which had the power since Independancy from British are United National Party which is symbolised by green colour elephant and Sri Lanka Freedom Party which is symbolises by blue hand.. Threre are many minor communist parties symbolised by red and different logos. For administration purposes country is devided into 9 provinces 25 Districts.100 Electorates. People over 18 years have the voting power. |

Climate

The country is surrounded by Sea with lowlands and in
the middle bulging out the mountains. The Climate is controlled by two monsoons South West and Norh East, Which is distributed from May to August and October to February Respectively. |

2540 mm – over 5080 mm scattered in the south west and southern wet area, Less than 1250 mm scattered in the North Western North and North Eastern dry Areas, Agriculture pattern also planned accordingly to the Monsoonal activities.Staple food is Rice. |

There was a disturbance
recently with recent tsunami on the 26th of December 2004,most of the
coastal area was hit by the tsunami tidal wave, but by now everything
has come to normal. Now there is no danger, because there are alarming
systems, and also through experience, people can predict earlier, if there
is danger. People are aware of such dangers and are constantly watching
such dangers. Inotherwords it is more protected than earlier. These are
accidents, accidents can happen anywhere in the world. There is no place
in the world which is 100% safe. People who take the risk with courage,
mostly win. |
